Coming to the end

At the minute I have 4 days left until I finish university for good. I cant understand why i'm not stressing out. Maybe that will come Monday morning when I realise i've forgotten to do something. At the minute i'm tying up all the loose end and sorting out all the work on my Mac that still needs to be printed for research folders etc. I must admit I will be excited to finish uni but I can see myself being pretty bored and not knowing what to do with my time. This semester has been quite different to last semester, I have enjoyed this semester more as I was able to express my self more by choosing my own projects and being more creative.

Friday 29 April 2011

I'm getting there.

I only have 2 weeks before I finish for good, i'm stressing out a little but I think it helps me work better. I have nearly finished my final piece for my animation. There has been a lot of editing and replacing of sections to create a flowing feel about my stop frame animation. I'm really pleased with the outcome as is the artist whom's track I choose to illustrate. I have a few more bits to edit then i'll finally be finished it.

Photos from animation

Here are a few images I have picked out of my stop animation work as they stand out as pieces of work on there own. These images might not make the final cut though.

Half way there

I am now half way through this project and I’m having a ball, this project gives great satisfaction when the photos are uploaded. I now have a lot of editing to do to prefect my final stop animation. This will probably prove to be more difficult that it seems. (ADD PICS OF CONTACT SHEETS AND ENVELOPS)

Resolving problems

As this is my creative thinking project I want to push some boundaries, experiment more with materials and achieve something i'm happy with.

As I don’t have a studio or proper lights to film my stop frame animation, it is proving to be harder than I thought. I have had to rely on daylight for the main source of lighting. As for props as you can see above, I have been using old pots and pans, books, tri pods, chairs and bottles to help me create this animation. I know if I was fully equip with all useful and studio equipment I wouldn’t be having so much fun. It has caused problems but I’ve managed to resolve them.

When I started

At the start of this project I had so many ideas and got confused on where to start looking for relevant research. It took me a lot of time to get into this project, but now that I have I think I’m going to enjoy it. As it’s my last ever project in Vis Com I want to come away with something I’m really proud of. Hopefully this will build up my confidence if I prove myself to myself.

Storyboard Idea

After rigorous research I came up with a storyboard idea for the track ‘Last time I Take A Bottle On A Date’ by Donal Scullion. At first I thought to create a storyboard explaining the track as an actual story. After creating the storyboard I was unhappy with the out come. I realised that the song’s lyrics are so literal in a sense that I didn’t have to explain the story of the song. By explaining the story the illustration would have became dull and boring. I have decided to take a more abstract approach and this work is still in progress

Self Promotion Ideas

Laura De Valencia is a Colombian graphic designer who recently finished the graphic design program at Santa Fe College in Gainesville, Florida:

"I created this coffee bags as a self promotion item for the Student Showcase at school. I chose specific coffee properties such as 'strength', 'flavor' and 'aroma' to talk not only about the coffee but also about me as a designer. The coffee was also relevant since I am Colombian and through its characteristics I could create an easy and fun metaphor about my creative personality."

Self Promotion Ideas

Love this piece of work from Christoper Doyle a designer from Australia who has used himself as his design and branded himself accordingly using the traditional branding guidelines.

Came across this back in 2008 and was very inspired by it and as this unit deal with self promotion i thought it would be very apt to include it as this is obviously a very memorable and eyecatching piece of work that would get definitely get the designer remembered by potential client. It gives a great insight into the nature of the designer as well as the personality of him. Love it.

I love how this ad brings showcase and entertainment together, demonstrating a new smartphone's imaging capabilities through a magical, microscopic animation. (Fun fact: this ad holds a Guinness World Record as the smallest stop-motion animated film.

This reminds me of something I do for my card making. The simple paper stage and graphics work well, I could use this throughout my frame animation or throughout the photos as speech bubbles, bottles and other objects.

Diesel - Be Stupid

Beatles - "Lucy In the Sky With Diamonds" Lost Jeremy Verse

Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" is a song written by John Lennon in 1967, and recorded by The Beatles for their album, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Lennon's son, Julian, inspired the song with a nursery school drawing he called "Lucy — in the sky with diamonds". Shortly after the song's release, speculation arose that the first letter of each of the title's nouns intentionally spelled LSD. Although Lennon denied this, the BBC banned the song.

Diesel: Brief BE STUPID

The Official Be Stupid Philosophy

Like balloons, we are filled with hopes and dreams. But. Over time a single sentence creeps into our lives. Don’t be stupid. It’s the crusher of possibility. It’s the worlds greatest deflator. The world is full of smart people. Doing all kind of smart things… Thats smart.
Well, we’re with stupid. Stupid is the relentless pursuit of a regret free life. Smart may have the brains…
but stupid has the balls. The smart might recognize things for how they are. The stupid see things for how they could be. Smart critiques. Stupid creates. The fact is if we didnt have stupid thoughts wed have no interesting thoughts at all. Smart may have the plans… but stupid has the stories.
Smart may have the authority but stupid has one hell of a hangover. Its not smart to take risks… Its stupid.
To be stupid is to be brave. The stupid isnt afraid to fail. The stupid know there are worse things than failure… like not even trying.
Smart had one good idea, and that idea was stupid. You can’t outsmart stupid. So don’t even try. Remember only stupid can be truly brilliant. ( Source from Diesel )

Diesel - Safe For Work Fruity Porn (SFW) Viral

I have decided to use the basis of the Diesel brief from D&AD students awards. I want to have a more creative challenge for my portfolio. A more artistic approach. First of all I must concentrate on research in many aspects of music. I want to investigate how other illustrators have approached illustrating books, music and campaigns. Above is a video/llustrated animation from a Diesel campaign, Its quirky, effective and the viral made a lot of people talk.

Reflection: The Body Shop Packaging

This was my returning project from the christmas holidays. I had 4 weeks to complete it, as I wanted to see how I could cope with such a fast paced project. As it had to be entered into D&AD, it excited more and gave me a buzz. I had intended to improve on all aspects of my work from last semester. I managed to only gather the relevant research and use the relevant research for my work. It took me a while to get there but I did in the end. Due to doing the right research in the right amount of time I was able to improve my development work and develop a stronger outcome. I had trouble at the start as I was adding to many elements on to each package, so from this I have learned that 'less is more'. I believe my time management has greatly improved in class and with my work deadlines. This is due to the planning I did at the start of year.

The Body Shop Packaging

The body shop has asked us to re-design a contemporary package for a range of products. I have choose to re-design the tea tree oil, facial wash, the white musk body lotion, the aloe Vera body butter and the oil free balancing liquid foundation. The design must unite the 5 core values that the body shop believe in.

First of all I decided to look at the materials used. The body shop use plastic bottles that can be recycled but they can not be refilled due to a law that was passed. My way around this was to think of a material that could hold liquids and creams and be 100% biodegradable. After rigorous research I came across a material/product called 360 Paper. 360 Paper water bottles are designed by Brand image. It is a responsible design that equates innovation with responsibility to people and planet while being mindful of the environmental impacts it could have. This package utilises sustainable sheet stock of bamboo and palm leaves. 2 halves are pressed together and a micro PLA film provides a liquid barrier so that it can hold liquids and creams. I want to use this concept for the structure and material for my packaging as it is 100% biodegradable. I will not be using the shape that Brand image used. As this product idea helps people, plant and planet it falls into my concept for the outer design. My package will also have this micro PLA film on the outside so that it can be used in wet areas and remain in its original state.

The concept behind my designs evolves around the 3 P’s, planet, people, plant. The body shops strengths are that they are well liked for its ethical standards and natural ingredients but other competitors are offering a more natural cosmetic
Approach and the same “green message” so that is another reason why I choose the 360 Paper concept. I will put emphasis on the ethical beauty and humanitarian issues by using the 3 P’s. My initial thought was planet, people, product but it didn’t fir into the 5 core values of the body shop. I wanted to get the 5 core values across by using the 3 P’s, (the 3 P’s is something we have all heard before, weather it be in school or the work place.) I decided to use planet, people and plant. The 5 values fit into the 3 P’s as:
1. Against animal testing comes under planet
2. Supporting community trade comes under people and plant.
3. Activating self esteem comes under planet.
4. Defending human rights comes under people and
5. Protect our planet comes under planet.

This package design will make the customer feel good on the outside by the use of the product and good on the inside as it shows how much the body shop helps the planet, the people and plants.

I wanted to create an identity for the 3 P’s. I designed an identity logo that represents the 3 P’s and also 3 p’s that represent them. I want these signs and symbols to be on each package so that the body shop packages are united and get the body shop message across. I have came up with a colour range to distinguse each of the products so that they are easy to recognise. The colours I have chosen are bright, cheery and slightly different to the body shop ranges at the minute, I believe these colours will appeal to the target audience.

I LOVE TECHNO

I entered a competition to design a poster for one of my favourite festivals in Europe 'I LOVE TECHNO'. I had to use the 5 colours of their brand and the type they provided. The posters were rated online to indicate a winner. I believe I did a good job as my poster was highly rated but unfortunately it wasn't rated high enough.

Project Three Design Out Suicide

When I received the brief for this project I was disappointed at the nature of the project, as we had to do it over the Christmas holidays. I struggled to choose an issue at the start but decided to choose “Stamp Out Suicide’ as I don’t want to see this happening so often. I knew I had to think quicker than I did with the previous project.
My first thoughts were to research what other designers had done with similar projects and what way they approached the subject. I knew I had to be tactful. I needed to communicate a direct message. From the research I had done I realised this issue was not really used that often in schools as it is a sensitive subject. This made me think of my target audience. I choose to concentrate on young people aged 12-18, male and female. I then remembered what I had in school that could be of use for my designs.
As suicide is a big concern in young people I wanted to try and prevent it from happening and schools were a good place to start. This target audience made it a lot easier to work on the project. My ideas came together very well even though I had hit a hurdle over the Christmas period. I produced everything I wanted to from my strategy but I know I could have produced it to a better standard. I thought my outcome of ideas was strong and I had made a good effort. The colour scheme used is from the propaganda posters I researched, white, red, black and grey, they are strong colours for a strong message. This project ended up interesting and enjoyable.

Project Two Branding /Paint Hall

The second project got me excited, as branding is my favourite thing in this course. As with many project I feel like I jump in with an idea and it gets stuck in my head. I started this project thinking that my idea to rebrand the paint hall as a worldwide nightclub was a great idea. I started the project and was working quite hard until I hit a brick wall. My idea was uninteresting and boring. I then had to go back to the drawing board and start again.
I had to think of something that interested me and I went back to my childhood once again and thought of Alice in Wonderland. I then thought it would be a good idea if I combined my first idea of the nightclub and Alice in Wonderland. I then thought that I could get something quite amazing out of this.
I stated to get excited about the project again. It was a good few weeks into the project before I cam to this decision. Time management is definitely something I need to work on. I had to think of a quirky name that represented where the nightclub was and the theme of the nightclub. I came up with Curious Docks. This then gave me more ideas for the nightclub branding. I wanted to keep it monotone, curious and inviting. I did this by creating illustrations that represented the characters from Alice In Wonderland, but in a curious way.
My final design was a success. I designed an invitation for the opening of this nightclub, I designed posters and mock up badges that were to be gave out as promotional items to intrigue people and make them curious of what was to come.
I believe this project was very successful compared to my last project but I still need to work on my time management as I could of done a lot better.

Project One Spirit of Place

This project was to investigate a spirit of place and complete a photographic audit of that place and then document what we found I a well-designed format. I began this project choosing a place that meant something to me. This made finding my target audience easier. I started of taking photographs Botanic Gardens, as this is a place I remember fondly from my childhood. I realised after taking loads of photographs that they were no good for my project. After being unsatisfied with my photography I re-evaluated my target audience. As I had intended on designing a children’s fun activity pack I knew I had to do a lot more research. At this stage I was already 2.5 weeks into the project. I got back on track and photographed things from the park in a way that children would be interested and intrigued by. This was shown in my activity booklet. This gives me more confidence to execute my work. I also realised at this stage that I needed to investigate children’s books/magazines etc.

As I had little time left I had to start designing my booklet. I thought about size, paper and packaging. I wanted the booklet to be small enough to fit in a child’s hand, big enough to write in and small enough to hang round their necks. The idea for the package came from the use of a map case. This could hang round there necks, keep the booklet dry and hold a pen and the items they were asked to collect through out the activity book.

After reflecting on this my choice of paper could have been better and my time management. I had more time and produced a mock up of my final piece earlier; it could have been a lot better. I enjoyed the project, as it was a nice icebreaker into the start of the New Year. This project needed a bit more work but I believe the initial idea had a commercial quality to it.
